Mimo | Helping Parents Rest Better

September 6th, 2013 by NearInteraction

There appear to be very few limits where the “quantified self” movement can go, especially if this piece of baby monitoring equipment designed to give parents peace of mind is anything to go by.

Mimo is a connected onesie that monitors a baby’s sleep and feeds the information back to parents using an integrated smartphone app.

For some it may seem like technology gone too far, but it could address the very real problem of 4,000 infants who die suddenly every year in the US, often with no obvious cause. Many of these deaths occur during sleep, so Mimo alleviates any fears parents might have by letting them know everything is alright, and setting off an alarm when things are not.

Available on a crowdfunding site this Thursday, the kit will cost $200. It comes with three organic cotton onesies that act as respiration sensors, a toy turtle clip that monitors movement, and a Wi-Fi base station shaped like a lily pad – fully equipped with a microphone.

The app that goes along with the equipment is available for Android and iPhone, collecting important information displaying events such as how many times your baby has rolled over in the night, longest nap, and other changes over time.

The company that made the device also had to deal with concerns over choking hazards, and making sure their wearable technology is still appealing to mothers, making them confident enough to put their infants in such a device.

TAP M&E Paris Air Show 2011

June 26th, 2011 by NearInteraction

NearInteraction was part of the 49th International Paris Air Show 2011 held at the Le Bourget Airport at the end of June, with a series of interactive installations revealing the services offered by TAP Maintenance and Engineering (TAP M&E). NearInteraction was responsible for an eye-catching gesture based interactive wall, comprised of 4 large scale high-res screens where visitors were able to manipulate the inner workings of an aeroplane by using their arms, and an all inclusive iPad app of TAP M&E facts and figures which connected in real-time to the interactive wall, displaying any content that was being browsed at that moment.

At an event that brings together more than 2100 exhibitors from 45 countries, it is an important consideration to stand out from the crowd, a consideration achieved by NearInteraction with an interactive LED installation embedded into the booth’s specially designed awnings, featuring RGB light that was able to respond to both presence and movement with beautiful dynamical transitions of color as attendees passed by.

Urban Apps: when meaningful ideas connect communities with interactive technology.

February 10th, 2011 by NearInteraction

“… I honestly think that the ideas we came up with could not have been produced by a conventional method. I think that the process led to some real originality – reaching bits of the mind that other methods cannot reach. Fascinating stuff as I suspected – but having experienced it I am now sold!”

“The storytelling approach to exploring solutions was great. Your model pushed us to get into the detail of our characters and places and really brought out the creative side of our group.  The depth of the characterisation helped us understand the situation.  The creative thinking around the narrative opened us up to more creative solutions for the App/product.  The storytelling enabled people from different professional backgrounds to develop a shared language, moving beyond our professional boundaries and exclusive language. Consider yourselves to have designed a really successful model.  I’m certainly going to use it again to explore a few projects I’m working on.”

A one-day workshop in London exploring the possibilities of merging interactive technology with community-led projects using NearInteraction’s NearLab’s unique collection of tools, probes and thought-provokers to inform and facilitate the innovation process. In the form of sets of cards, flash sets and scenario sheets, these are designed to operate on principles that encourage creativity and collective ownership, allowing the users the ability to be intuitive, recognise patterns, and explore the full potential.

The series of 3 workshops utilise the combined intelligence of the participating group, and facilitated with “learning together by doing” practices, including facilitated brainstorms, curated problem solving exercises, experience-based-learning, case methods and physical prototyping sessions, resulting in the generation of valuable, tangible outcomes.

Send a Postcard iPhone App

July 15th, 2009 by NearInteraction

Yet another task the iPhone can simplify: creating, printing and sending postcards without ever having to physically handle one. PrintYourLife.com has devised an iPhone app called goPostal, which can be downloaded to the iPhone for free. Users take a photo or choose one they’ve snapped earlier, write a message and select a recipient from their phone’s address book. The postcard is then printed and delivered via postal mail to anywhere within the US for USD 1.29.

While they may lack the personal touch of a handwritten postcard, goPostal’s missives provide a tangible and perhaps more thoughtful alternative to emailing a photo, without more effort for senders. Postal services: time to partner with goPostal or set up something similar of your own! (Related: Email a photo to send prints to friends & family.)
