Maker Faire from MAKE magazine

January 24th, 2009 by NearInteraction

From out of nowhere, MAKE has established itself as one of the hottest new brands in the magazine publishing industry – with close to 130,000 paid circulation; newsstand sell-through near twice the industry norm: over 3 million unique visitors to per month; and a podcast that consistently ranks in the top 25 computer and tech podcasts.

But the real story here is the curiosity, vibrancy and passion of Makers, the people who comprise the rapidly emerging ‘tech DIY’ category – scientists, homemakers, students, car enthusiasts, software developers, musicians, crafters. Individuals and communities of people drawn together by a common delight in the magic of tinkering, hacking, and creating unexpected new uses for the technology in their lives.

Maker Faire seeks to inspire, inform, connect and entertain thousands of Makers and aspiring Makers of all ages and backgrounds through the public gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, students, authors and commercial exhibitors.

The first UK Maker Faire will take place in Newcastle 14-15 March 2009 as part of Newcastle ScienceFest – a 10 day festival celebrating creativity and innovation.

August 12th, 2008 by NearInteraction

27 January – 1 February 2009
House of World Cultures, Berlin

transmediale is one of the leading festivals for art and digital culture internationally. On a yearly basis it presents advanced artistic positions reflecting on the socio-cultural impact of new technologies. Its program includes a conference, an exhibition, live performances, film and video programs and a variety of fringe events throughout Berlin.

With the festival theme DEEP NORTH transmediale.09 focusses on the global artistic, cultural, societal and philosophical consequences that the presumed imminent collapse of the polar ice barrier may trigger. Are we about to reach another historically succinct moment of no return leaving in its wake uncontrollable global transformations? Does climate change elicit cultural change, a shifting of extremes or a collapse in established, systemic and network norms?
